New to oboe: Help me with my tones on lower register, esp. third line "C"

Hi fellow oboe players:

I'm new to this instrument, having played it for just three months. I am a late starter, 35 years old, and loving this new hobby. I have an excellent teacher but am wanting input from others besides my teacher. Please comment if you don't mind:

I am learning from Gekeler Method Book 1 and a lot of emphasis in the first 20 pages is on the upper register (open hole D up to the higher C) with etudes and songs mainly in the key of C. I find that when I start playing songs in the upper register, and then go back to the lower register ***in the same song***, those lower notes sound pretty bad, especially third line C. However, when songs are started in the lower register, the sound is nice and consistent. Odd, huh?

Do you "good" players adjust your embouchure on these lower notes after playing high notes? Blow less? What? I find this is the case regardless of reeds, as they all do the same thing..... I'm using Edmund Nielson reeds Blue Thread, by the way, that my teacher "tweaks." I suspect my tight embouchure on the higher notes is the cause of the problem. When I start on the lower notes, the embouchure is more relaxed.... Hmmm?

Any input is appreciated...will this "fix" itself in time or do I need to do something different?

Thank you

Jay (San Antonio, Texas)
