... when everyone was 'green' in music on oboe, what did you find helped most to develop your 'mental ear' for true pitch of notes, automatically finger them and blow them in tune on flexible pitch oboe?

... i'm still in unconnected 'mechanical mode' at present, reading notes off the page, but i'm not able to pre-think 'true pitch' in my head, i'm relying on the oboe to present me with the notes, sort of like expecting it to be fixed pitch like piano (which of course oboe isn't!)

... if you said to me 'play top E-flat' that's easy enough, mind & fingers know that, but i wouldn't know if it was in tune or not without comparing with another source, piano or reading the lights on a tuner, because i'm doing the right fingering and i'm assuming it's a good note

But if you played any note or an easy little tune, without telling me what notes they are and asked me to play same notes by sound alone, I'd have quite a lot of trouble finding those notes on oboe (wow it must be wonderful to hear a tune and then just be able to reproduce it right away)

This unconnected 'mental deaf spot' seems to be the key to improving intonation as right now it's hard for me to tell if i'm really in tune or not when i'm playing on my own in practice or lessons. When i play with someone else, i can get in general tune with them but i can't seem to pre-think "that note" in my head; for example, i still rely heavily on tuner for A440 or B-flat

What's worked well for you folks to develop these co-ordinated musical skills?
