Music stores are closing right and left! They weren't just stores; they were places where you ran into friends and you could shoot the breeze. They were places with studios where you could rehearse and teachers could give private lessons. The business model now is Thomann and Amazon.

From about 1995-2005 I went into music stores and bought up all the advanced method books I could find. I did that by thumbing through them first to see if I would benefit from them. I don't know why someone would buy a book online without seeing what's in it. That is why I send 7 samples of my book when e mailing potential customers. I know they could just copy them and pay me nothing, but seeing a few samples is the only way I would buy a book, solo, etc.

A shame, I had many fond memories of visiting brick and mortar stores just to see what was in stock: reeds, mouthpieces, sheet music, method books, and the like. A friend remarked that too many people nowadays base their gear purchases from online reviews without actually trying them out in person, something that I'm admittedly guilty of as well.

In the following link, Fast Company News reported on 03/20/24 that Sam Ash was closing only 18 stores
What I found interesting was the 3rd and 4th paragraphs. As of 03/20/24, Sam Ash clearly had no intention of closing all of their stores. However, on 05/02/24, Sam Ash made the announcement of closing them all.
So, IMO, something happened between these two dates to cause them to abandon their initial "restructuring business model" to closing all of their stores.

As to the why they closed all the stores: "A hundred years is a long time in business but the last 10 would have felt like a thousand in the age of digitalisation, with online sales presenting physical retail outlets across all sectors with an existential challenge. Simply more and more players are preferring to buy their electric guitars online."
