Hi everyone,
First, as I was browsing eBay for good clarinet deals today, I noticed that there were more than the usual number of pro-line eefers for sale...
Perhaps disillusioned Minnesota auditioners?
And the question:
Anyone have a recommendation for a CHEAP (under $30) and BRAND-NEW case? I have an old C Albert horn which in its used case developed a serious mold problem. I can only imagine it was from the case. I hope my tech can fix this horn...I'm a little unhappy about it. When/If it is healthy again, I'd like to find a case that will NOT repeat this whole scenario...

I bought my case on Ebay for somewhere around 15 dollars. It was the case to one of those cheap CSO instruments (likely one from Costco or Sears).
The clarinet fits. And it stays closed. THat's really all I need.

Check out your local chain music store... parents sometimes get talked into buying Protec cases for their kids' Vito/B10/YCL-250, then the store sells the original cases as cheap replacements. Yeah, it's unethical, but it happens.

I notice above you state "it's unethical, but it happens." What's unethical? I think you might be missing the point of the after-purchase sale being just plain old-fashoined business.

Just that they're making extra money on something that goes for free with the instrument (and should have still gone for free with the instrument, regardless of the purchase of the extra case). My little music shop would never do such a thing.

I think Kal is somewhat correct. The price of the instrument includes the case. Just because the parents bought a new Pro-Tec doesn't mean they aren't entitled to the original case. However, with that said, if the price of the new case is considered an upgrade on top of the price of the clarinet kit then this is totally legitimate.
It all depends on how it's presented.

Yamaha A clarinets are sold with a Yamaha double case as standard and often these cases are left behind if the buyer opts for a different case and the Yamaha cases are sold off at a fraction of their full retail price.
Recently I bought a new YBS-62 bari sax case for £250 from a major UK retailer and have also bought other cases for other instruments that have been orphaned as the buyer of that instrument ditched it at the point of sale. Their loss is my gain.
Check all the major retailers and specialists as they don't really want empty cases cluttering up the place and will sell them at a bargain price just to get rid of them. If you find a decent Bb single case, it won't take much doing to adapt it to fit a C clarinet by cutting some high density foam blocks to fill in the ends of the joint slots so the joints for your C clarinet will fit in them with no shifting about, then lift up the fabric lining and place them under it, then refit the fabric lining to hide them - you may not even need to glue the fabric down once the joints are fitted in their slots.

If you want one of these on ebay search for "gun cases."
I once bought one on ebay with dual sides. One side contained by Bb, the other my "A." As long as the bell of each instrumennt where positioned in different places in the case on either side, as their width at the widest part was more than 1/2 the width of 1 side of the case, it safely contained my horns in an incredibly small case that was otherwise put into a larger gig bag with the rest of my gear.
