 Mouthpiece similar to Portnoy

What's a new mouthpiece that plays like a Portnoy BP02? It seems Babbitt doesn't make them anymore.

I may not be the best to comment though I owned (and enjoyed) a Portnoy BP2 for awhile during the '70s. It was a "free-blowing," somewhat forward sounding mouthpiece. Although I would add that at the time you could try 10 of those and NO TWO would sound or play the same.

Having said that, what I like now for that sort of response is a Clark Fobes C.W.F with a "Zinner model A" bore. It is fairly unique in its "free blowing" nature.

But I go back to the fact that I have NO direct comparative experience. Those playing moments were separated by 40 years!

Shame. I really wanted to reply with "Another Portnoy BP02".

Hi All,

I still have and enjoy the Portnoy BP02 I bought in the early 1970s. The mouthpiece (and its backup) still plays just great. Both are earlier models with some rings around the piece.

As far as a mouthpiece to replace the Portnoy, I have two tossups as playing in much the same manner. They are a Borbeck 16 and a Stowell Wells Schneider B2. I go back and forth between them. Sadly, neither of these seem to still be in production.

But is there a mouthpiece still made that plays in a similar manner? The only one I have tried and been somewhat satisfied with were Van Doren B45s (there is a great variation between those I own).

Sorry, I have not measured any of these wonderful mouthpieces and have no plans to do so.

Best,

Hank

Ramon Wodkowski has a page on his website which discusses this design. Basically a very open facing with a somewhat shallow baffle. Possibly similar to the design Martin Frost uses.

In the link below, Ramon comments on the original BP02s. Also, at the bottom of this webpage, he reveals being a Portnoy distributor to the UK and "will soon be offering new and specially enhanced Portnoy mouthpieces."

Following up to Dan’s post. The post he refers to is 12 year old. UK distribution was something I did not pursue. I also have since moved to the USA.

I do make mouthpieces of my own which Paul may find similar to his Portnoy in some ways. These are a new design I have just come up with, made by CNC and finished by hand - not advertised just yet but available. They would work well with BP1 and BP2 facings.
