The reason for the need by symphony musicians [and for some Bdy musical numbers in many sharps] for the A clarinet is that the transposition by flatting every note [including accidentals!!] it quite difficult to keep in mind while playing. The other transposition of music in C to our Bb [same as playing F music on an Eb] by raising one note and adding 2 #'s isnt as difficult , but I still prefer the C clarinet for oboe parts where the brighter tonality is more oboe-like !!
