 Amplification

I've seen sax players with some kind of portable amplication device that is attached to the bell. Is there anything like that for clarinet? I realize that the sound comes out the open holes, not the bell (with the apparent exception of chalumeau E at least) but having a microphone in the general vicinity of the instrument should at least help. The clarinet is just so out volumed (I know it isn't a word) in jazz and pop/rock music and whatnot.

If you can find instrumentalists these days who understand the meaning of "balance", "ensemble", "musicianship", "harmony", "taste", etc., you, the clarinetist, won't need any gimmicks. If you only can find players who insist they're the center of everyone's interest then, as you say, having a mike nearby might help you feel better.... [right]

The Doctor sells a "power barrel" for $100 - I don't know how well it works, but it's an option.

I need amplification because the brass players are pretty loud. But there is usually a microphone available and I just pull it over close to me. There is also a clarinet player I know who is louder than any trumpet or trombone player, just on his own.

Gobs of other posts on this subject.

Search for "microphone" or try one of these posts:

A Shure SM58 or the newer Beta58 are reasonable low-end choicea. You can put it on a separate boom, or use "The Claw" and hook it to your music stand. For more money, AMT makes a mini-boom system that works really well.

Then there are the questions of how your sound will be amplified, what speakers will be used, who will set levels, etc.

Hi All:
Happy New Year!
For some reason, I find the Shure SM57 (I think that's the serial number) works better for the clarinet than the 58. From the specs, I would have thought otherwise, but somehow the tone comes through better on the 57 for me and my C clarinet.
I still haven't found a wireless system that looks good to me.
Good luck! :-)

The SM58 is a vocal mic, and has a bass rolloff and brightened midrange that would be generally unflattering to a clarinet (or any other instrument). 57 is an instrumental mic.

Celeborn:
To answer your question directly, the mic that fits your description is the AMT - TA-WS double mic. It clips on the bell with one mic head there and another is positioned above the tone holes.

Best
Rick
