I notice that Mark and others often try to direct people to the excellent Woodwind.org search function, which almost always provides the information that is being sought, including some expert discussion from the Klarinet listserv.
Since a large percentage of posts and discussions are in fact retreads of older posts and discussions, I was wondering if it would be useful to try to identify fresh topics to explore over the coming year. Perhaps this would reduce the "Groundhog Day" effect of the bulletin board.
That being said, maybe those with the most institutional knowlede (Mark, GBK in particular) could suggest some topic ideas that haven't yet been discussed.
Is that a bad idea?

I seem to remember also Mark mentioning that retreading a past thread is allright, given that the past thread is two-ish years old. This allows for some fresh opinions from new BBoard members, allows others who have maybe gained a little experience in whatever the topic is to chime in, and also, sometimes certain things are just plain nice to be reminded of every now and then. I know I never would have made certain purchases had I not seen a "beaten to death" topic pop up and I would have missed out on some valuable items.

... you know, I searched Woodwind.org for the term "quitters" and never came up with any of your posts. I guess the little tag signatures that constantly appear at the end of some people's posts don't make it into the database

I can sympathize with suggestions to do a Search....but I also wonder what the BB would be like if people did that....found an answer....and then just went away.

OK: Here is some news that will come to light in 2005.
Sources close to the woodwind.org website have revealed plans to start their own ebay type auction site.
Non-bidders will be given rights to post pos. and neg. views of the lister and of the item.
The web moderator could not be reached for comment.
The mafia arm of a certain clarinet manufacturer (Cosa Auguste...or... The Ebony Hand) will patrol the board for signs of insurrection according to a boastful Don, Frank Kluck.
A ten kilo shipment of contraband Gonzalez reeds was seized crossing into the US. Agent for the NSA, R. U. Lapeek, is credited with bringing down the low flying plane with a V12 missle. The intended recipient, one G.B.Kay, was arrested outside of his home, where he was spotted by a whistle-blowing neighbor throwing out boxes of 400 grit sandpaper.

I think that one of the most valuable aspects of the bulletin board is the different opinions on the performance of music. I don't think we can ever have enough of that.
I also think that there is not enough discussion on the technical aspects (fingerings, dynamics, phrasing, etc...) of performing many of the key pieces of the repertoire.
Ken Shaw has written some very valuable master class essays on selected works. These are invaluable, if only as a starting point for interpretation. We need more of this.
The exchange of favorite fingering ideas in difficult passages is another area which could benefit all, from beginner to pro.
Sometimes we get too bogged down in a multitude of juvenile postings, the minutia of equipment, the never ending talk of who or which is the "best", and forget about the actual music...GBK

I tend to find it difficult to warrant starting a new discussion on topics I'd go for. If you like, I can introduce new threads like...
"Music written more than 10 years ago should only be performed in 'nostalgia' and 'comeback tour' concerts and as encores. Discuss!"
and
"People play things nobody wants to hear, declare it to be high art, and then complain when the arts aren't patronized. Discuss!"
and
"You and your fingers can bite me! Screw technical accuracy, and play the @#$% music already!"
...but phrasing them into meaningful discussions without coming off as an irritating, self-righteous turd is indeed quite difficult. If people are up for such "so far outside the box that I set the box on fire" discussions, I'll try to chime in (with more tact, of course) from time to time.

I swear that I heard on of these guys whine for an hour on CBC radio. He devoted his performances to contemporary Canadian atonal works. His instrument? The Accordion!
You can't make stuff like that up.
