The clarinet solo in the middle of Verdi's The Force of Destiny overture is played on an A Soprano, right?

I assume it is. Try it on a Bb, though -- it's a nice little workout. Start on C#.

BTW, "Guiseppe Verdi" translates to "Joe Green."+

I'm going from ear, having never seen the music. Sounds like C# on my recording. It does go up to F# on 1, right??

The long-ish solo in the middle of the overture to "La Forza" (the one with the harp) is for clarinet in A. The first note of the solo (the eighth note pickup) is a written D-natural.

The entire overture, BTW, is for clarinet in A.

I don't have the music either, but just looked at the MIDI file sequence. The pickup is a concert B, so therefore a C-Sharp on Bb and D on A. And like Ralph said, it is a nice little workout to try (and not a bad sounding little tune either).

I mean't that it would be a nice workout on Bb only.

And about his name - I have a book called "On This Day in History", and for its October 10th entry (Verdi's birthday) it said a little summary that included:

"...Even if you are unfamiliar with the opera Aida, you have to be impressed by this composer's lyrical name alone. But would you be amused by his name's English translation? Somehow, a Joseph Green opera doesn't sound quite the same."

Larry, of course is correct.

I assumed (Moral: never assume anything) that the original question was in reference to the famous Third Act clarinet solo, which is written for Bb clarinet.

One of the most passionate of all the clarinet solos in the repertoire..GBK

GBK, thanks for reminding us of the solo in the third act. Boy, this wonderful clarinet sound supported by the tremolos of the violins while everyone is dead lying on the stage (this is right after a battle), what a thrill!

Stéphane.

Although I have never watched the opera, but have heard the solo played numerou times, I still vividly remember Ricardo Morales playing the solo as an encore piece after his recital performance at the 1995 Clarinetfest.

He dedicated the piece to his good friend Ben Armato.

When Morales finished his passionate playing of the aria, the hall was deathly silent for a long moment before erupting in sustained applause.

Truly breathtaking...GBK
