Is anyone using a Clark Fobes barrel?
Author: m1964

I was going to get a Moennig barrel for my R13 (had one before and sold it).
I felt that the barrel I had improved the tone of the clarinet (at the time I had a pre-R13) without affecting the tuning much.

Someone, however, suggested to get a barrel made by Clark Fobes.
I wonder if anyone used his barrel and what were your impressions.

Thank you

I personally have a pair of ringless & ringed blackwood as well as synthetic Fobes barrel each(65-66mm Bb taper) and they're my favorite barrels. However I was using them on RC Prestiges of which the A clarinet also works better with 66mm barrel(a big plus for me!), and both sound & intonation are noticeably better than the Moennig barrel pair I had and now sold. I've since sold the RC Prestiges and now play on Selmer Presences which also work well with the Fobes barrels(especially the ringless and synthetic ones) albeit needing some more adjustment with my embouchure, and I've also tested them on a Buffet Festival Bb as well as a Selmer Privilege Bb and they work quite well too. However, I must note that I've always been particularly comfortable with Clark Fobes' products in general(and am close to him personally), and your mileage may vary.

I don't play an R13, but my section mate does. He has been using a Fobes barrel for 2 or 3 years and loves it. It sounds fine.

I only have time for a short answer just at this moment... my observations....
- Fobes barrels that I have owned- improved intonation a LOT over various other options.
- Didn't "add" much to the tone, but had a good basic sound + very very even response
So, "neutral for tone but excellent for tuning and response".
Note- I never said "bad" for the tone, just neutral. My experience is that MANY barrels that add to the tone (change sound significantly) do so at the expense of response and evenness.
(used on Buffet Festivals + R13)

Donald,
thanks for your feedback- I think I know a local shop that sells CF barrels so I can try them in person.
It would be interesting to compare a CF barrel to a Moennig one, so I'd get a Moennig (or borrow my old one) first. I will post my impressions if/when I get a chance to compare the two.

When I wanted to buy a shorter barrel for my Greenline I opted for a synthetic Fobes. I didn't notice any change in sound or response but it did provide a way to slightly raise pitch when necessary – which is why I purchased it.

I use one and think it is great. Not only is intonation really good, it seems to be more even in tone and response across the range compared to others I have used. I highly recommend them!

I took a chance on a synthetic one off eBay for $50. I thought it made an improvement in tone and eveness of scale on my Leblanc Symphonie II.
