Hello All,
I'm looking for opinions about the Khachaturian Trio. I am thinking about putting it on my recital in the fall. Have you played it and what do you think of the piece? My university library had a copy of the score, but no recording so any suggestions for a good recording would also be appreciated. I checked <tapmusic.com> and found one with John Russo, but I'm assuming there are more out there. Also, (I know, this post is getting long...sorry) any other programming suggestions would be helpful. I am looking for a piece of chamber music to round out the program. I am most likely going to play Muczynski 'Time Pieces,' Martino 'A Set for Clarinet,' and the Poulanc Sonata. I was thinking about the violin, piano, and clarinet combination. As you can see I have a lot on my plate already so I don't think I want to tackle the Bartok or Stravinsky at this point. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Khachaturian Trio is excellent music but hard to bring off. It's more difficult than it looks, and you need to sweep through the very "Russian" flourishes with lots of tensile strength in the phrases and no hint of strain.
Simeon Bellison made an outstanding recording (the first one, I think). He was Russian and caught the character better than anyone else. I have an LP reissue on LP (along with the Mozart Quintet). I'm not sure whether it ever made it to CD, but it's worth looking for.

I and my other trio-mates love the Khachaturian trio - it's very soulful, middle eastern sounding. I think it's best played very loosely. The clarinet part can really sing/swing.
Another nice trio to round out your program would be Ponchielli's Paolo and Virginia - not too hard to play, but perhaps hard to find. It's available though.

I just can't get into the Khachaturian Trio even after playing it a few times. For me there are better works for this arrangement. Milhaud is fun, but for a very cool piece try the John Harbison. There is also an interesting trio buy a guy named Richard Faith. I am not sure where to get the music for the Faith trio, but there is a recording out there that also has the Khachaturian on it. I think the clarinetist's name was Kathy something--the CD was stolen from me a few years ago. There is a good recording of the Harbison with Loren Kitt, but I am not sure where you can find it.

The Khachaturian Trio for Clarinet, Violin & Piano is included on a 2-CD EMI "double fforte" (read "bargain") set, featuring the Melos Ensemble performing music of Ravel, Poulenc, Francaix, Milhaud, Bartok, Prokofiev, Skalkottas, and Khachaturian (the Trio).
Gervase de Peyer is the clarinetist.
The catalog number is: 7243 5 72646 2 4 (with 72646 being in bold type).

How freaky, I just stated on this trio! I love it, it's beautiful. Not finding it overly difficult, though. The violinist is having counting and subdivision problems, it's quite difficult for her.

I might also suggest the Trio by Gian Carlo Menotti, which was written for the Verdehr Trio. The Romanze is one of the most beautiful things I've ever played...and the Envoi is a ton of fun!
