----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title : W. A. Mozart - Clarinet Concerto in A CD/Record # : MYK 37810 CD/Record Mftr : CBS Masterworks Conductor : George Szell Orchestra : Cleveland Orchestra Clarinetist/Piece: Robert Marcellus/ Comments : The Marcellus recording of the Mozart concerto is phenomenal, but I got into a dispute about this recording with someone on the classical music newsgroup. When a person asked for a good recording of the piece, I recommended this one. Somebody responded by saying that Marcellus was "sterile and dry" and that he far preferred the Jack Brymer recording. The way I hear it, Marcellus has such a purity of tone and perfection of technique that he doesn't need to embellish his performance with vibrato, etc. It's quite a heavenly recording, and as far as I'm concerned, the definitive one. But others will beg to differ.
